I don’t know if there really is one single most important thing that is needed in order to live in the freedom Christ shed His blood for, except for accepting Him as Lord of your life.  I think all of the points I have covered from the beginning of this Live In Freedom series has been vital for our life of freedom (read from the beginning here).  However, if you are able to work on just one thing right now, I think it might be this one essential thing for living in freedom.

Living in the freedom of Christ is a lot of work. Especially if you have a vault of horrible secrets like I did. It can be overwhelming knowing where to start healing, what to 'deal' with first. If there is 1 Essential Thing For Living In Freedom, it is knowing whose we are.

Know Your Identity

How often do we look to others for our identity?  Our spouses?  Our friends?  Even celebrities!  What’s more, we look to material things – homes, cars, clothing to determine who we are.  Whether it is a fancy home or a one-bedroom apartment with peeling wallpaper…a new Ferrari or an old jalopy…either way, we allow those things to define us.

Or how about the mistake we made last week?  Or several years ago?  That failed relationship.  How often do we use these past failures as things that define us?

“I’m just a big screw-up!”

“I can’t ever do things right.”

“I’ll just mess things up again.”

Do any of those sound familiar?  Do you realize that they are LIES?  Lies whispered into your heart so that you would be hindered in fulfilling God’s plan for your life?  They are murmured into your ear by the father of lies…the guy who doesn’t have the capacity to tell one single bit of truth.

Let’s look at God’s word for some clarification of our identity.

John 1 12

Jer 1 5

We Are His!

He gave us the right to become children of God – We ARE His children.  It is a right that none can take away from us.

He knew us before we were born and He had a plan for us long before we took our first breath.  We are sanctified and made holy by God.  That is who we are.

eph 2 10

A Masterpiece!

You are God’s masterpiece, His handiwork.  I love to quilt and sew.  It takes a lot of time and effort to create a project.  But when I am done, I am so proud of the completed creation.  There is a sense of joy and satisfaction from seeing what I worked so hard on see completed.  I believe this is just a tiny glimpse of how God feels when He looks upon His workmanship…us.

The Hope of glory resides in us as followers of Christ.  We have His Spirit living inside of us.  This is part of our identity.  When we have Christ in us, how can we be anyone but who He says we are?

Colossians 3 12

Fearfully & Wonderfully Made!

You are fearfully and wonderfully made – and your soul KNOWS it!  Begin praying this!  That you know this truth deep within your soul.

We are the elect of God – therefore we need to start behaving like we are His elect – we need to choose freedom!

2 Cor 5 17

1 Peter 2 9

We Are a New Creation!

In Christ, we are a NEW CREATION!  He has made everything new.  EVERYTHING!

You are chosen, a royal priesthood – you are His own special person.

Psalm 45You are a royal daughter, dressed in royal robes of many colours woven with gold.  He welcomes you into His throne room.

The Savior longs to be with you because you are His.  He adores you, cherishes you…and longs to lavish His unfailing love upon you.

Just because you are His.

Know It and Believe It!

In order for you to KNOW your identity you need to be in His word regularly, knowing His truth.  This is how His truth will sink deep down into your heart and root itself there.  If you need encouragement in this area, pray about it.  I always ask God to touch my life in a marvelous way so that I will desire to spend time with Him.  This is one prayer He will most surely answer!

I also love journaling in my Bible. It has extra wide margins, giving me room to draw and colour.  I see that some gorgeous Bibles will be coming out that have drawings already inside that one can colour.  There are also a variety of scripture colouring books.  Try these ideas out…it is such good therapy for the soul.

Freedom Is A Choice

The enemy wants to steal our identity.  This is what he does.  When my oldest was 6 years old, she started behaving in very odd ways.  She was always a very loving and affectionate girl.  All of a sudden she was saying horrible things like, “I don’t like you”.  Or she’d say she didn’t like her little brother.  She would look at me and say these things with coldness and hate in her eyes.  This was NOT normal behaviour for her.  I could’ve punished her and directed my attention only towards her behaviour, but thankfully, I was sensitive to the Holy Spirit and I just knew something else was going on.

Godly Wisdom

I asked the Lord about it throughout the day and then it came to me.  I realized that her behaviour was just herself trying to protect her heart from further pain.  We had lost a few family relationships a few months beforehand.  And then some things happened with friend that left her devastated.  The Holy Spirit revealed to me that Sarah was in such pain from everything that had happened in our family that the only way she knew to cope was by being unkind and hurtful to others.  She was just protecting her heart from further damage.

I asked her if any of that could possible be true and she said she thought it was.  We talked about how God made her a loving girl who finds joy in showering love upon others.  It is a special gift.  BUT, through these painful events, her enemy has stolen this from her.  I told her that she had a choice to make.  She could choose to allow her enemy to continue stealing from her, taking what did not belong to him.  Or she could choose to invite Jesus to heal her heart and reclaim the territory Satan stole.  If she chose the help of Jesus, I promised to help her work through the pain.  I prayed with her and left her to consider her big choice.

A Choice

I prayed that entire night.  I was afraid that she would not choose healing.  If she did, I wasn’t sure what I’d do.  The following morning, I went to her and asked her what her decision would be.  She said she wanted Jesus to heal her.  Boy, was I relieved!  We worked through the pain and we prayed together a lot.  I gave her scripture verses to claim over her life.  I taught her tools that she needed to have so she could choose freedom in the future.  And the time did come when she needed to use them again…and she chose freedom.

Our enemy is here to kill and destroy.  We have to choose freedom…it is our choice.  Are you ready to choose freedom by believing who God says you are?

I have made up a special love letter for you from God’s word.  Feel free to download it.  If you want to share it with a friend, please feel free to send the link to this post!

  • What a wonderful, encouraging post! I love all those scriptures too! Yes, the Lord knows us and knew us before we came to be – it’s so important to remember that!

I pre-ordered a colouring/journaling Bible for my best friend as a Christmas gift. It was released last week – I can’t wait for her to get it in the mail.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom Aimee – your posts always refresh me.

    • Ohhh…what Bible was it? That makes me excited! I am sure your friend will LOVE it!
I am so glad you feel refreshed, Jennifer. You always encourage my heart!

  • That’s the one I’ve had my eye on!! I want it!

    • I’ve been tempted to get it for myself too.

Thanks for sharing this fabulous post (and for linking up to the #SHINEbloghop).

      Wishing you a lovely day.

  • So many people do not know where to find their identity. They think it is something they can develop through what they accomplish or who they know, but as you’ve so eloquently pointed out, Aimee, the only person who can give us a secure and true identity is Christ. I’m so glad you’re addressing this and I’m also so impressed with how you handled your daughter’s challenging season. You are a great mom and godly mentor to many, my friend!

    • Thank you for your encouraging words, Beth! When we went through that time with Sarah so long ago (it feels like eons ago!), I didn’t know that one day, she’d be telling me the same stuff on those hard days. She is always telling me Truth when I need it!

  • This was a very sweet post. I especially love how the Holy Spirit gave you wisdom on how to speak with your daughter. I agree that knowing who you are is essential. When I first became a Christian, someone wrote an encouraging note to me calling me a beloved daughter of the most high King. I always come back to that.

    • Thank you Angela. “Beloved daughter of the most high King” – that brings such comfort to the heart, hey?

  • How wonderful that you were able to hear the Holy Spirit and deal with your daughter in such a way that brought salvation and freedom to her life! PTL! So much grace and truth here, Aimee!

    • I can’t tell you how thankful I am that I actually listened and obeyed the Holy Spirit’s prompting! There have been times that I haven’t obeyed…and I have regretted it. Sarah remembers this time as well. I see how she has grown into such a beautiful young woman of God. I believe that how I handled this situation early on in her life set the tone for future challenges.

  • CW

I needed this in a way I can’t even describe. Thank you so much!

    • I am so glad that the Holy Spirit spoke to your heart here, Claire. May God bless you and bring more healing to your soul.
