Fad Diets: What Didn’t Work…And What Did

6 Amazingly Simple Changes For Better Health

If you are like me, you don’t want to make a bunch of huge changes to your diet in order to get healthier.  I’ve tried some bigger changes, which I will share more about next week, but for the most part, those massive changes were not helpful and it was quite difficult to stick with those changes.  I have learned over the years that smaller changes are easier to make and continue on with.  And they have made a difference!  

Change is never easy, especially if the modification is big. It can seem overwhelming ad daunting to tackle those kinds of changes. So I have shared some of the simple and small changes our family has made to get healthier. Here are my 6 Amazingly Simple Changes For Better Health

Portion Control

I used to eat A LOT.  And quite honestly, I was proud of the amount of food I could eat.  In my early adulthood, my 5′ 3″ frame weighed only about 112 pounds.  I was small – and it would impress people with the portion sizes I could manage.  There was a local pub that had a colossal steak that if you could eat all of it, they would not charge you for it.  Although I did not attempt this challenge, I was told several times that I would easily be able to do it!  

I had a problem with portion control and I’ve had to purposefully put less food on my plate.  This is extra hard when Marcus cooks up one of his steaks!  But I have gotten a lot better.

Eat Just Enough

I also used to eat and eat until I was completely stuffed.  Walking and moving around became difficult when I had that much to eat!  I have learned to pay attention to my body’s signals and I stop eating when I am satisfied.  Portion control also helps with this problem.

Keep It Fresh

Serve fresh veggies for lunch and dinner.  Our family enjoys grape tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli…and various other fresh, raw vegetables during meal time.  We will occasionally cook vegetables like corn, asparagus or potatoes – or put veggies in a stir-fry, but for the most part, our veggies are enjoyed raw.  The kids all prefer them raw and they are so much easier to prepare!  We wash and cut a bunch and keep them in a container in the fridge, making it quick to pull out for meals (or snacks).  

Be A Master Home Cook

Make your own meals at home.  I am so very blessed to have a husband who loves to cook and since he works from home, we have the luxury of good, home cooked meals every day.  He has taken the time to perfect his skills and he likes to add a lot of great flavor to dishes.  

When you have delicious, home-cooked meals, you will less likely to go out to eat.  I understand that this can be more challenging if both husband and wife work outside the home, but with some planning and a bit of work, eating home-cooked meals can happen.  

Preparing a huge batch of frozen meals is a great way to get home-cooked meals on your table.  I have used most of the recipes in the cookbook “The Big Cook” for my frozen meals.  The “Don’t Panic, Dinner’s in the Freezer” books also have fantastic recipes for the freezer.  Loony Spoons is just another one of my favorite cookbooks.

If You Must Eat Out

About a year ago, I made a quick stop at McDonald’s for one of their new chicken burgers.  I was hungry and I knew it would be a while before I got home.  I needed something to eat.  So, I foolishly pulled into the drive-thru.  I knew with my first bite that I was going to seriously regret buying the flavorless sandwich.  I did not enjoy it one bit.  What a waste – of both money and calories!  I wished I had waited a bit longer and got something at home.  This is what happens, though, when you have mouth-watering meals at home – most other food tastes boring.

My husband and I have learned that if we are going to have something to eat out of the home, then it has to be absolutely scrumptious.  No more lousy food that makes me want to barf.  Seriously.  I wanted to rid my body of the fast food burger that tasted horribly!  If we are going to get something not cooked at home, it’s going to be worth every penny and worth every calorie!  And those restaurants are hard to find;)

Fry It!

My hubby has been using the T-fal ActiFry appliance for cooking potatoes, chicken wings and button ribs.  For our potatoes, he cuts them into chunks, tosses them in a little bit of olive oil.  He adds various spices and herbs and then ‘fries’ them in the fryer.  Chicken wings are just as easy with a bit of oil, salt and pepper.  And then there are button ribs.  Oh, boy!  If you have never had button ribs, you are missing out!  My hubby puts fresh lemon juice and pink Himalayan salt (healthier salt!) on his ribs and they are so good!  The T-fal ActiFry uses less oil for cooking and it is so easy to use.  Saves times as well.

5 Important Things To Remember Before You Hit The Gym

My heart filled with dread.  It was measuring day today.  I loathed the idea of stepping onto that evil scale.  And the thought of having that measuring tape remain at the exact same place around my arm and my abs filled my heart with discouragement.  So, do you know what I did?  I decided to forgo my measurements!  It was so freeing to stop fretting about my measurements and just focus on my workout and the positive results I was getting.  So, if you are feeling discouraged by your lack of progress at the gym, I want to share with you these 5 Important Things To Remember Before You Hit The Gym.

Find What You Love

I think this is one of the biggest factors that will contribute to any exercise regimen.  If you love it, you will stick with it.  If you hate it, it will just be a matter of time before you quit.  You might even start believing that all exercise is painful and a nightmare.

Some people love to run.  I know, it doesn’t make sense to me either;)  I don’t like it one bit.  I get shin splints like crazy.  I bought expensive running shoes that were supposed to help.  They didn’t, so I bought another brand.  No success.  I gave up.  Running is NOT for me.  But there are many people out there who don’t have the same issues I have with running (shin splints, pain in my knees) and they live for it.  

I love the challenge of weights.  The feeling I get when I move the weights up one more notch makes me feel STRONG.  But not everyone likes weights.  If you don’t find something else.

For several years, I attended a weekly adult jazz dance class.  It was so much fun…AND…I got to dance on stage for the year-end recital.  What a great chance for this introvert to SHINE!  

1 Corinthians 10-31Maybe you enjoy exercise videos at home.  Do that.  Or perhaps you enjoy hikes or walks in nature.  Commit to continuing on with that form of exercise.  

Whatever it is that you find to do, you will find so much more fulfillment and additional benefits if you enjoy it.  

Find that sweet spot and run with it…either literally or metaphorically depending upon how you feel about running;)

Skip The Scale

When I joined this new ladies gym in January, I requested a training session with a trainer.  One of the first things she said to me was, “Your scale is mine”.  She was intending for me to become obsessed with stepping on the scale every day – or even weekly – for the first couple of months.  The scale is not the single most important indicator of success at the gym.  

Believe me, I know.  How many times have I stepped on that scale only to see the number increase.  It is discouraging!

One thing we need to keep in mind when we are exercising is that we are building muscle and one pound of muscle is a whole lot smaller than one pound of fat!  So, while that scale might not be going down, that doesn’t mean that you aren’t getting rid of fat.  It is likely that you are replacing fat for muscle – pound for pound.  If you don’t believe me, simply google “one pound fat one pound muscle” – and you’ll see.  

So, stay off that scale!  If you have to, bury it under some boxes deep inside your closet so it is difficult to get out.

How Do Your Clothes Fit?

After about 5 weeks of my new fitness routine, I noticed that my bra wasn’t fitting properly.  At first, I thought that it was just too old and the elasticity was shot.  But then I realized the truth.  The band was too big!  Then I started noticing other articles of clothing and how they were fitting.  Some were looser and some were just too big now!  And just so you know…the number on the scale did not budge.  At least not yet.

Be aware of how your clothes are fitting.  This is a fantastic indicator of fat loss.  Share this progress with a friend and celebrate.  It is a wonderful achievement!

Physical Fitness And Beyond!

1 Corinthians 6-19I had just finished several report cards in one day.  My brain felt ‘full’ and tired.  At first, I did not want to head to the gym because my head hurt from the work I had accomplished that day.  However, I decided to go anyway…I wondered if exercise would help me feel better.  

I went, completed my routine and walked out the gym feeling lighter and more relaxed.  It worked!

I also look at the long-term effects on how I feel.  Exercise is so good for helping feelings of depression.  Years ago, when I joined this other ladies gym in my previous town, that was one of the main reasons.  I was struggling with depression and I had heard that exercise helps.  My exercise was a great supplement for the healing work Jesus was doing in my life at that time.   

There have also been times when I have gone to the gym while angry.  WHOO!  What a workout that always is!  And I generally feel better afterward. 

Our entire body is the temple of God and it is our responsibility to do what we can to care for it.  Therefore, if you feel better emotionally and mentally through regular exercise, that alone is worth sticking with your commitment.   

Most Importantly…

There is one dynamic of successful exercise that is often overlooked – or not even thought of by most.  That is prayer.  I pray for my exercise regularly.  I pray that God will bless this time that I spend taking care of my body and that He will help me to be physically fit.  I pray that I will enjoy my time at the gym and the results I see will glorify Him.

Try praying for your exercise time.  Praying while working out is even better!!

How Health Is Bringing My Bodacious Back

Change…not a word many people like.  But it was something I knew I needed to do.  I felt apprehensive about change.  Who doesn’t?  However, the weight had inched its way on my body and I knew it would be a huge struggle in getting it off!  If I didn’t take action NOW, I knew it was just going to get worse.  So, I put my ‘big girl panties’ on and did what had to be done.  I got a membership to the local ladies gym.  Over the next several months, I’ve had some amazing results from the small changes I have made.  I want to share these changes with you over the next few weeks in hopes to encourage and inspire you to make whatever changes necessary in order for you to improve your health.  Here is How Health Is Bringing My Bodacious Back .
